Weekend Adventure In My Own Backyard.

Updated: Sep 13, 2023

Not all of my weekend adventures are at an Ontario Park. Sometimes you just need to grab a friend and explore your own backyard!

This weekend was a busy one for me. I headed to Trenton, ON on Friday night making a stop at the Big Apple before getting to my sisters for her baby shower on Saturday.

The Big Apple is one of my favourite places to stop when travelling east on the 401. They make the best pies and apple fritters. I have been stopping there ever since I was a little girl and now as an adult, I like to continue the tradition. The Big Apple is more than just a bakery these days. They have a large petting zoo, dog park, mini golf, kids train ride and food truck area as well as the famous Big Apple observation deck.

In my opinion, this is a must stop when travelling across the 401!

I picked up some apple treats for the baby shower as well as a mini apple pie to take home to my dog sitter to say thanks for watching Rosie so I could go away.

Saturday’s baby shower was beautiful. It was full of family and friends and so much love for Baby Mila. We laughed, played games and showered Alicia with gifts for the new baby. Baby Mila holds a special place in my heart already, her due date is my birthday and she is going to be named after me. One of the things we had at the shower was to write a letter to Mila for her to open on her 16th birthday. This was very emotional for me. I wrote 3 pages and was in tears by the end of it. I am so excited for this little girl to arrive even if it’s not on my birthday. After the shower I decided to head back home. I was missing Rosie and my own bed. It was nice coming home to a warm welcome from a puppy who missed me just as much as I missed her.

Sunday morning I woke up and decided I wanted to go out for breakfast. I hadn't been grocery shopping yet this week so I knew I didn't really have anything in my house to eat. I was craving a good diner breakfast so I called a friend and said “Let’s hit the city for the day!” By noon we were at the George Street Diner.

We had breakfast on the patio and it was so good! I have never had Irish Soda bread before so that was something new. This place is apparently famous for this type of bread. I personally wasn’t a huge fan of it but the rest of the breakfast was amazing! After we ate we decided to wonder.

With no real plans in mind, we just started walking through different neighbourhoods in Toronto. We came across Kim’s Connivence and I fan girled a little because I loved that show. After wondering this area of the city and our parking time was coming to an end, we hopped in the car and headed to Yorkville for espresso.

Walking through Yorkville is always so fun for me. Looking through all the windows of the designer stores making a mental list of all the things I will buy when I strike it rich. Everything is there, Tiffany & co, Chanel, Rolex, Cartier as well as my personal favourite Christian Louboutin.

One day, I will have the red bottom shoes! But for now, just walking though the store was enough for me. I always enjoy looking at all the luxury cars that were parked on the streets and looking at some of the old hotels that are in that area. The Hazelton Hotel is outstanding. I can't wait to stay there and have my Ferrari valeted while I'm wearing my red bottom shoes with my Tiffany ring, Cartier watch and Chanel dress. Life is all about manifesting, right?

Once I stopped daydreaming, we found Coco Espresso Bar and sat on the patio and sipped on coffee, ate tiramisu and people watched.

The tiramisu at this place was spectacular! The lady fingers were soaked in espresso and when you put the spoon in, you could see the coffee drip out. That is just how I like it. I love when the cookies are soggy and soaked in espresso.

Of course while we were in Yorkville, we had to walk through Eatly.

We looked at everything! The pasta, the wine, the cheese, the pastries. If you have not been here I highly recommend you check it out! My first experience at Eatly was in NYC in 2014 when I went to visit a girlfriend there. I was so overwhelmed with all of the amazing things in the store, I didn't know where to start! I was super excited when they opened a location in Toronto. Eatly is an Italian market that also has a few restaurants, and they also offer classes where you can learn to make pasta or other Italian dishes. I think that would be a great adventure all on its own. I'm sure one day you will be reading a post about that adventure. I have also been to the location in Las Vegas. This is a highly recommend place from me.

This was a great day in Toronto. I love coming here and exploring the different neighbourhoods, checking out different restaurants and shops and most of all just people watching. Toronto is such a diverse community and there is so much to see and do. We only scratched the surface while we were there but it was so nice just to walk around, have some good conversation and so many jokes. Spending time with a good friend is always an adventure on its own!

Before we headed back to Vaughan, we wanted to grab some pizza for dinner. We googled different places and ended up at Pizzeria Badiali. This was a small place with only a few tables outside. The line up was huge to get a slice so we knew we were in the right place! We decided to try 4 different slices to see what our favourites would be. We both decided that the Burrata Marinara was our top slice followed by the Spicy Sausage. The Mushroom Bianco and Classic Pepperoni came in at the bottom.

After the pizza, we walked up and down Ossington and checked out some of the cute little pubs and restaurants and took notes for where we want to come when we come back to the city!

Not every adventure need to be huge. Sometimes all you need is good company and no plan and you can make an adventure out of anything! That is exactly what I did this weekend.

I’m not sure what my next adventure will be, maybe another camping trip, maybe a day trip to another city or maybe just chilling at home with Rosie. Since I have been writing this blog, I have seen several ads for an adventure scratch off book. After watching a few Instagram reels about it, I realized something like that isn’t for me. I thought it would be but to me, the best memories are always made when things are unplanned! But if this book is something that might interest you, check it out!

But until next time, keep seeking adventures where ever you can!

Love,

Liz
