Camping at Point Farms Provincial Park

Updated: Aug 16, 2023

Here we are, another camping adventure! This time I headed back to Lake Huron to Point Farms Provincial Park. This park is located just outside the town of Goderich, Ontario. As always, Lake Huron's white sandy beaches and bright blue water made me feel like I was at the ocean.

Point Farms Provincial Park Sign

Camping at Point Farms Provincial Park was a little different than the parks I'm used to. This is more of a beach vacation rather than a hiking one. There are a few trails in this park but they are more of a leisurely stroll rather than a hike. The Old Farms Trail is the longest trail and it leads you all the way around the park. This trail connects the 2 campgrounds and leads you to the lake. While I was wandering this trail, I came across another small trail called the Story Time Trail.

There were little signs along the way that read a story. It was great for kids who are just starting out on their hiking adventures. We also explored the Below the Bluffs trail. To get here we walked down about 120 stairs from our campground to the lake. This was a linear trial that lead you through the woods while still being able to hear the waves from Lake Huron. All the trails I explored I would rate as easy. There were no steep inclines or large rocks to climb. Kaidy even enjoyed these trails and after our last hike at Charleston Lake, she swore she was never hiking again. Off of the Story Time trail, there was a large baseball field and horseshoe pits. We took the dogs there and just let them run around and chase each other. On the Old Farms Trial, you walked through some open fields, some treed areas and some old orchards. There were a few historic signs along the trail where you learned about the Point Farms Hotel and the Sterling Barn. The barn is still standing, but closed in 2006.

Now, let's talk about the beach. The beach was amazing!

Girl doing handstand on the beach

Beautiful white sand and water that went on forever. You didn't know where the water ended and the sky began. There were a few large rocks in the dog beach area, so wear your water shoes if you are heading to that side of the beach. We

didn't explore the people beach because Kaidy and I had Stella and Rosie so we needed to stay in the designated dog area. The weather wasn't perfect for us while we were there. When I arrived on Friday afternoon, it was rainy but soon cleared up. There were still lots of clouds in the sky so we didn't get to see the incredible Lake Huron sunsets but we still enjoyed our time at the beach. Sunday was the best swimming day for us. After we packed up our campsite we headed back to the beach and swam for a while. Kaidy loved the big waves that came off the lake. She said she felt like a mermaid. She even needed to take her hair down and let it flow in the water. When we went down to the beach on Saturday night to watch the sunset, the waves were HUGE! She was so excited to just sit on the shoreline and let the waves splash against her. Some of the things that come out of this kids mouth just make me laugh like crazy. She thought if she threw rocks into the lake, the waves would get angry and get bigger so she threw handfuls of rocks to try to get the biggest waves.

French Toast

Saturday morning when we woke up, it was time for coffee and breakfast. We made Protein French Toast that I have never made before but turned out so good. I just mixed egg whites with a Caramel Premier Protein drink that I had leftover from my morning coffee and a sprinkle of cinnamon and dipped in some whole wheat bread. I would highly recommend trying this. I am going to do this again for sure on another trip or even just a weekend breakfast at home. French toast is a comfort food for me and I needed to find a way to add extra protein so, Premier shake instead of Milk and I was good to go! There are always ways to add extra protein into your favourite foods, sometimes you just need to be creative.

Lighthouse in town of Goderich

Saturday was a rain day for us so we decided to take an adventure into the town of Goderich. This was one of the cutest little towns I've ever seen. It reminded me a lot of Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls. The downtown was a one way street that went around in a circle with little side streets off of the main strip. I've seen an arial view of the downtown and it looks like a wagon wheel. All of the shops in the circle looked very vintage. We took one of the side streets that lead us to the beach. We drove down to the end of the street through the Rotary Cove Beach. This was a beautiful site. The shoreline had a nice sandy beach, but at the end of the road was a rock point.

There were huge boulders that lead out to a point in the lake.

Two girls on the beach

We also saw the small lighthouse near the beach. Along the boardwalk, there was outdoor exercise equipment. Of course Kaidy and I needed to get in a workout while we were there. Check out my Instagram for the reel of Kaidy's workout. I would highly recommend visiting this town. This is one of the first trips I've been on where I was happy it rained so we were able to explore outside of the park. For me, the park didn't offer some of the things I enjoy. There was no rental office to rent kayaks or canoes. The hiking wasn't really hiking in my opinion so I was happy to get out of the park for a few hours and explore the West Coast of Ontario.

On our way back to the park, we stopped at The Station and grabbed some French Fries. I'm a sucker for fresh cut fries, so when we saw the sign we needed to stop. For dinner that night I finally cooked a steak. The last 2 trips I've been on, I have packed a steak but never actually cooked it. Maybe it was because I had company for dinner on this trip so having a nice grilled steak didn't seem like a chore to cook.

Young girl washing dishes

Overall, this was another great trip with a great kid. We are making memories that I know I won't forget and I hope she will cherish as well. Teaching her things in the outdoors is so important to me. She is enjoying doing the dishes outside and cooking along side me. She wants to make a TikTok for every meal we cook and as long as she is having fun, I will make the videos. I know there will come a time in the not too distant future that she will be "too cool" for this stuff and hanging out with Auntie Lizzy won't be fun. But until that day comes, I will take her along and continue to explore different things with her. Opening her eyes to the outdoors and experiencing nature has been a great accomplishment for me. Don't get me wrong, she is still an 11 year old kid, so she did have iPad time, but we played games, we hiked and we played in the waves and these are experiences I will never forget.

If you have been to Point Farms Provincial Park, or even to the town of Goderich, comment on this post and let me know your thought. As always, remember to follow me on Instagram for all the up to date things that are happening on my adventures!

Happy Camping!

Love,

Liz
