As Labour Day weekend approached, we packed up the car and headed to Sandbanks Provincial Park, eager to soak in the last moments of summer. Sandbanks is famous for its stunning sand dunes, gorgeous beaches, and warm waters of Lake Ontario—perfect for a long weekend camping adventure.
We arrived on Friday evening, ready to set up camp. Our campsite was tucked away in a cul de sac, with 2 other campsites. There was little to no privacy in this area. After pitching the tent, setting up the tarp and organizing our gear, we settled in for a relaxed evening.
The night was peaceful, with the sounds of crickets and the distant lapping of waves from Lake Ontario setting the mood for the weekend. We sat around the campfire, planning out the next two days—excited for both a day trip to Prince Edward County on Saturday and a day of beach fun on Sunday with my sister and her 2 kids.
We woke up to a rainy Saturday morning and decided to take a trip to visit my sister who lives in Trenton as well as explore Prince Edward County. After a quick breakfast of coffee and eggs, hit the road. The county is just a short drive from Sandbanks, making it an easy and worthwhile excursion.
Our first stop was to see my sister and get in some snuggles from my almost 1 year old niece Mila. After a few hours there, we decided to hit the county. Our first stop on the way was to Jerkabego. It is an amazing food truck on the border of Trenton and the county. If you are in the area, I highly reccomend. The vibes are the place are so fun! Josh and his crew always show so much love to their customers and the food is out of this world! I have know Josh for many years and everytime I am out this way I make a point to stop in and grab some jerk chicken and rice.
After our bellys were full it was off to the town of Wellington, where we strolled along the waterfront and checked out some local shops. We visited a few charming boutiques, checked out the Iconic Drake Devonshire Inn, as well as a few other hotels along the waterfront. We decided to drive around from Wellington to Picton and we stumbelled across this place called Base 31. Unsure as to what it was, we didn't stop but it looked so cool! After a google search, we found out that it is the site of a former WWII air training base that they have changed into a visitor center and event venue. This place is on our list for the next time we come out to the County for sure! By late afternoon, we returned to the campground, excited for Sunday’s beach day.
Sunday morning brought sunny skies and perfect beach weather. After a leisurely breakfast, we waited for my sister to arrive with her kids before heading to the beach. We packed up towels, sunscreen, and snacks and were off to Sandbanks’ famous Outlet Beach. Known for its shallow waters and soft, golden sand, this beach stretches out along the shores of Lake Ontario and is a perfect spot for families and beach lovers alike.
We set up our spot on the beach, soaking in the view of the sparkling water. The waves were rolling in, inviting us for a swim. We spent most of the day in and out of the water, splashing around and riding the huge waves. The water was just the right temperature, and we lost track of time as we floated and swam, enjoying the peaceful rhythm of the lake.
When we needed a break from the water, we lounged on the sand, snacking on fruit and cold drinks from our cooler. The soft sand underfoot and the warm sun overhead made it the ultimate summer beach experience. The kids were building sandcastles, and the laughter filled the air, creating a joyful and relaxing atmosphere.
As the afternoon wore on, we wrapped up our beach day with one last dip in the lake before heading back to camp. After a day full of sunshine and swimming, we returned to the campsite for another classic BBQ dinner. This time, we grilled up burgers and veggies while reminiscing about our weekend adventures. With full bellies, we settled in by the fire, watching the stars twinkle overhead. The night was cool and calm, the perfect end to a weekend full of exploration and relaxation.
Monday morning was bittersweet as we packed up our gear and prepared to head home. Before leaving, we took one last walk along the beach, soaking in the final moments of the trip. The quiet of the morning, with fewer people on the beach and the soft sound of the waves, was the perfect way to end our long weekend.
Camping at Sandbanks Provincial Park over Labour Day weekend was the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. Whether it was exploring the charming Prince Edward County or enjoying a full day at the beach, this trip left us with sun-kissed skin, happy memories, and a full heart—until next summer!
Happy Camping 🏕️
Love, Liz
